Lower socio‑economic status and its correlates such as lower educational achievement, poverty, and poor health have ultimately affected the Muslim community. Social reformers of Maharashtra like Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, and Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil had a keen understanding of these social ills during their time. They fully realized the dire need for spreading education to enlighten the poor, the weak, and the dispossessed. They believed that education alone could correct social ills. Inspired by this philosophy, some retired persons from Satara came together for the betterment of the Muslim community. Retired Post Master Marhum Abdulkadir Shaikh initiated this movement to enlighten Muslims. This novel movement was supported by Haji Majid Shaikh, Marhum Haji A. B. Sayyad, Marhum Haji Gani Shaikh, Mr. Papabhai Tadasarkar, Haji Gulab Shaikh, Marhum Haji Karim Shaikh, Retired Principal Haji M. A. Shaikh, Marhum Haji Mubarak Mulla and Marhum Principal Asif Maner.
         The Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) has given a great solution of Zakat, important pillar of Islam, for removing the economic stresses hindering the Muslim community’s progress. Discussing the concept of Zakat with some Ulema, it was decided that Zakat can remove the economic anxieties deterring education for deprived Muslims. This led to the founding of Satara Shaikshnik ani Sanskrutik Society in 2004. Initially more than 60 members used to pay monthly subscription to the Society and this method is still continued. The believers offer Sadaqa and Fitara in the form of money to help the Society. The Society strictly utilizes this money as per the rules of Jakat to help the poor and needy students to complete their higher education.  Prizes and awards to meritorious students are conferred through the amount specially donated for this purpose. To empower needy women financial assistance is provided for their skill development
